Tallinn, Estonia - In a relentless wave of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks believed to be orchestrated by pro-Russia hackers, Elron, the prominent rail provider, temporarily faced disruptions to its ticketing service. However, the cyber onslaught has been successfully thwarted, and Elron's ticketing operations are back to normal.
The DDoS attacks commenced on a Wednesday afternoon, causing interruptions in the purchase of train tickets, both onboard and through the Elron website.
Erki Lipre, the Head of Ridango, the company responsible for Elron's ticketing solutions, clarified that the DDoS attacks, purportedly carried out by supporters of the Russian Federation, had been neutralized as of Thursday afternoon.
Lipre stated, "We collaborated and continue to collaborate closely with the State Information System Authority. By noon on Thursday, the seamless operation of the public transport systems had been reinstated."
In response to the disruptions, Elron had earlier advised passengers to carry cash for ticket purchases. Even on Thursday, while improvements were noticeable, several ticket points within Elron's trains were still encountering issues.
Elron's Customer Service Manager, Ardo Roosenberg, reported that the situation had improved compared to the tumultuous events of Wednesday afternoon.
The online ticket service of Elron also suffered similar disruptions on Wednesday. Given its interconnectedness with Elron's train timetable search facility, the disruption extended to both services.
The State Information System Authority (RIA) was promptly informed of the incident soon after the DDoS attacks began on Wednesday.
This incident highlights the persistent threat of cyberattacks and underscores the importance of vigilant cybersecurity measures in today's digital landscape. Elron and its partners have demonstrated their commitment to swiftly addressing and mitigating such threats to ensure the uninterrupted flow of vital services.
